S. Matteo at Cassaro's Church and Crypt

The church, it's an extraordinary example of palermitan baroque, founded the 15 april 1599 by Fra Leonardo Gallici of the order of Miserenimi which task was to celebrate several daily mass for Purgatory souls. There was a first church, builded during normann time, on the opposite side of this one, until the devotion for the purgatory souls became bigger that was necessary builded another church in today place thanks to the donation of a Palace an it's garden by the jurist Mario Muta in 1631.

The today church, was builded in 1633 and was consacreted in 1647, since the beginning was know as the church of 100 daily mass for the Purgatory souls, celebrated in any of the twelve altars. The church, made by Mariano Smiriglio has a basilical scheme with three naves divided by columns. It was Francesco Ferrigno that made the decorative project of stuccos, frescoes and marbles, in XVIII century. Theme of all the decorations it's the salvation of souls as shown from the "Guardian Angel" of unknow artist, in the first chapel on the left, spiritual guide for the safety of souls. On the next chapel, the canvas "S. Gregorio's mass", patron of brotherhoods that take care of deceased. It was S. Gregorio to start the practice of 30 continuos mass in order to save a Purgatory soul, that's why this practice it's know as "Gregorian masses". Also on top of the access it's represented in stucco, made by Giacono Serpotta in 1729, the Purgatory souls, prayed Christ to saved them, while an angel put an offering in a box. On the central nave the fresco of "Triumph of Purgatory souls".

The Crypt has the same lenght of the central nave, still visible niches for the corpses. In it, not only the Miserenimi's members of brotherhood had their sepolture, but also important artists like Vito D'anna and Giacomo Serpotta.
